Project Based Learning

Project Based Learning (PBL) is gaining popularity in public schools for many good reasons. Chief among these is demonstrated effectiveness in generating high levels of student engagement. Working on projects also tends to promote deeper understanding of concepts that are part of classroom curriculum. Additionally, PBL can be a great instructional methodology for developing skills in critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication – all highly valued for emerging workforce needs.

Unfortunately, not all teachers and schools that choose to implement PBL stick with it because it is not easy. Planning projects takes a lot of time and effort. Evaluating how students perform on projects in terms of individual student growth related to adopted standards can be difficult. Fortunately, there are some models of PBL that can be helpful. One of the best resources for PBL is the Buck Institute for Education, which has published the Gold Standard for Project Base Learning. Check it out at www.BIE.org.
